Despite COVID-19 affecting our racing schedule, WYC came together to complete a full racing schedule with incredible participation. It is more important than ever to honor the deserving members, volunteers, and community who helped make this year possible. With those special folks in mind, our Commodore Andy Spence-Parsons hopes to share with you a fast paced and incredible night honoring those important members with our traditional WYC Special Club Awards: Commodore Special, Doc Sam, Doc Sam AIS, Bail Bond, Foster Award, Sportsmanship, and Andy Crew (Boat of the Year will not be awarded for 2020).
Interspersed, we'll share a quick toasts with fleet captains, thanks to the production prowess of Petey Crawford. Take a minute with us as well to celebrate Wayne and Steve's retirement by enjoying a quick yarn with Terry Foster. Back for an encore, John Schroeder and friends join us for a quick number, polishing up last year's hit closing number.
Following the banquet hang tight for live WYC Sailing and History Trivia with Matthew Thompson and the WS Team. Don't forget to support our neighbors Wayzata Sailing in the online silent auction, or relax with a choice adult beverage from a member owned business.
Celebrate together while supporting member owned businesses.

John Schroeder is a professional musician based in Los Angeles. He grew up in Orono, and took sailing lessons at the Wayzata Yacht Club where he raced Optis and 420s. Some of his first performances were at WYC as a 13 year old with his middle school band, questionably titled Invasive Species. Their first gig was at the after party for the Junior Olympics in 2001 (in which John raced). They played at the club many times over the next few years, including after the ADA regatta in 2002.
Commodores Bert Foster and Mark Janda were early supporters.
Since those days John has gone on to become a professional guitarist, touring and performing with Frankie Valli, Pomplamoose, Marc Cohn, Jordin Sparks, and Robin Thicke, among others. He has played in the Dancing with the Stars house band and has a solo career.
At this year’s banquet John is bringing a band of friends from the LA music scene, including singer Raquel Rodriguez (https://raquel.la) out to play. This group features Nick Klingenberg on bass, Sam Brawner on drums and Adam Bravo on keys. Collectively they have performed with artists including Gwen Stefani, Dave Grohl, Anderson Paak, Lettuce, Nik West, Trombone Shorty, the Doobie Brothers, and on TV shows Vanderpump Rules, This is Us and Glee.
The band specializes in funk, classic rock, yacht rock, and 90s R&B and soul.
Coming back to play for the banquet is a life-coming-full-circle moment for John. It’s where he got his start performing, and he's so appreciative of the club for giving him a chance in those early years.
It’s also a family affair - Rear Commodore Charlie Schroeder is John’s father.
