2019 Women's Midwest Championship

Growing excellence in Women's Keelboat Racing

Over the last 50 plus + years, the Wayzata Yacht Club has been a strong proponent of women in sailing. Today, about one-third of our members (172 members) are active women racers. Our “Women at The Helm” Series originated in 1987 and is today averaging 28 boats. We have sent numerous teams to the prestigious Rolex International Women’s Keelboat Championship and two of our Commodores in the last 10 years have been female.

In 2019, we continue raising the bar for women's sailing programs.  We are inviting all women to the 2nd annual Women’s Midwest Championship, to be held on the beautiful waters of Lake Minnetonka!  The racing is meant to be competitive exclusively with women-helmed boats and all women crew.

Once gain, the Sonar fleet has generously agreed to make their boats available to teams that wish to compete. Please contact us for charter information, connecting with crew, and finding housing.  We are also welcoming Sonars from other clubs to participate.

Volunteers are needed to make this regatta a success! Please contact via email today.

The event has the following proposed schedule:

  • Friday, September 27: Clinic
  • Saturday, September 28: Racing
  • Sunday, September 29: Racing (no warning after 1200)

The entry fee is only $225 per boat if paid by August 15, 2019 (after that, the fee is $275 per boat).  This includes social activities for four (4) boat members!  Additional social tickets will be available.

FAQ

Q: What do you mean by a Women's Regatta?
A: Women at the helm and in the crew positions.  No men onboard.

Q: I am new to sailing/racing.  Is this regatta right for me?
A: This regatta is intended to be competitive and is intended for experienced women sailors.

Q: This all sounds great, but what if I do not have a full crew of women?
A: We can help fill your crew needs.  We recommend 3-4 on a boat.

Q: The race is being held on Sonars.  What if I do not own a Sonar?
A: We can help connect you with a boat to charter.  We do not, however, guarantee that everyone that wants a boat will get one.  There are a limited number of charters available.

Q: I have a Sonar, but it is quite expensive to go to a regatta at another yacht club.  How can you help me?
A: The registration fees are quite reasonable and we have done things to control costs.  Registration includes at least one meal a day for you and your crew.  Visiting sailors have typically been housed free of charge at a WYC member's house.  We can help connect you to that housing.
