Our Vision
The
Wayzata Yacht Club is a hub of
dedicated, passionate sailboat
racers nationally recognized for its
leadership and growth of a
preeminent, innovative regional
sailboat racing community.
About WYC
The Wayzata Yacht Club (WYC)
oversees one of the largest sailboat
racing programs in the United
States. Our Lake Minnetonka racing
programs include over 65 keel boat
races each season, conducted
primarily in 22-25' keelboats, with
participation of up to 130 boats for
evening races.
The
Wayzata Yacht Club also sponsors
racing in the Apostle Islands of
Lake Superior via our Apostle
Islands Station (AIS) in Bayfield
WI. This big boat schedule includes
both buoy racing and off-shore
sailing with boats that compete
throughout the Great Lakes.
The
Wayzata Sailing School (WSS) is our
nationally recognized and accredited
sailing school. This program
includes summer day camps and youth
racing programs. We are proud to
host the University of Minnesota
racing team as part of our club.
Many youth sailors train at WYC and
compete nationwide as members of the
Wayzata Sailing Team.
Club History
The Wayzata Yacht Club was founded
in 1965 by 15 sailors who had
purchased newly introduced
fiberglass sailboats. These sailors
moored their boats on land that had
been a boat landing since the very
first settlers formed Wayzata in the
1870's. Ownership of this marina was
in flux at the time and the sailors
decided to purchase the property.
The
early WYC decided that to remain
viable it must become a
racing/social club and not a marina.
Our early club history rode the wave
of new fiberglass boats entering the
market.
Sailing
seminars are a regular part of the
WYC schedule during the summer and
winter. Approximately 30 seminar
sessions are hosted yearly with
programs for all levels of adult
sailors.
The
Minnesota Women's Sailing Team sails
out of WYC and introduces many
female sailors to J22's each year.
One-Design Racing
In 1965 our program began with about
16 Ensigns and 15 O’Day Daysailors.
Early one-design fleets included
upwards of 40 Ensigns, with large
fleets of Flying Scots and Etchells.
MORC was popular at that time and
made up the majority of boats along
with the newly popular PHRF.
In the
late 1970's six visionary sailors
purchased new J24's. Hulls #6 and #7
still sail locally. These boats
quickly became J24 Fleet #1. When
the J22 came to market, J22 Fleet #1
was formed for Lake Minnetonka
including both WYC and MYC.
WYC is
also home to one-design fleets for
Sonar, S2 7.9, Laser, and the very
successful and unique Capri 25
fleet. Approximately 80% of WYC
currently races one-design.
Current Programs
WYC continues to expand the quality
of our programs and reach out to our
community as a sailing resource.
With Judge Training seminars to
improve the quality of local racing,
schools and seminars to improve the
quality of our sailors, and
website/e-mail to improve
communication to our members we look
forward to the next 40 years of
racing.
