Three semesters of Celestial Nav plus a little Navigation Charting distilled to two hours. This will be a very high-level introduction with lots of pictures, minimal mathematics. Understand how spherical trigonometry works then step outside, weather permitting, and “shoot” Aldebaran (Taurus), Sirius (Canus Major), and Pollux (Gemini). Early arrivals might get a shot of Venus before it sets.
Ideally, celestial navigators have 4 things: Sextant, Ephemeris (like the Nautical Almanac), Chronometer, and some Sight-Reduction method (I’ll mention 5).
Fortunately, there’s a Free App for iPods, iPhones and iPads that does all of the above. You are encouraged to bring your device, after downloading AstroNav Lite by Sascha Troscheit: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/astronav-lite/id440513517?mt=8

Steve and Tom discuss how to balance a "point in time reference" with the background required to recognize the implications of that single slice of time.
