Race Management Seminar 04/29/2017

A US Sailing One Day Race Management seminar will be hosted at Wayzata Yacht Club on Saturday, April 29th. The head instructor will be International Race Officer John Strassman. The course is open to everyone, and that includes all Wayzata YC members!
You are invited to attend, whether you are interested in helping out on the RC team during club races, or assisting at WYC-hosted regattas doing timing or flags or mark and course setting. This course is the gold standard for how race management is done around the country, and internationally.
In addition to the professional race management staff members from WYC & MYC, this course is open to volunteers from both clubs, and folks from all around the upper Midwest. It's limited to 30 total spots, and 17 spots remain as of March 20th. Seminar cost is $55, which includes course packet, online testing (for those hoping for certification) and lunch (by Blanchard catering). US Sailing Membership is required. If you are new to membership, US Sailing offers a discounted special introductory membership you can sign up for before you register for the course.

Property Improvements

We have many improvements slated for the 2017 Season.

We'll continue the dock improvement program for C dock and the B dock extension.  This will include new electrical for both B and C docks.  Parking lot improvements will be completed early fall of 2017.  Hennepin County won't be complete with work until mid summer 2017.  We'll continue to have access to the lot for most of the spring and early summer, and will work with the contractors to assure the mess is kept to a minimum until the work along the railroad easement is complete.

Starting in late October we'll start renovating to accommodate over 180 parked cars, improve the surface of granite chips like we have at the West parking lot, and provide some new landscaping.  All of this is required by our PUD process and is the first step to completing those requirements.

All of these dock improvements will make your boat faster, and your crew more skilled!

World Champions!

Recently, Wayzata Yacht Club sailor Joel Ronning (Capri 25 #197) took his team to San Francisco to compete with 63 other boats in the J/70 World Championship.  They prepared and executed with near perfection, and ultimately took home 1st place!  Congratulations to Joel and his team for this incredible victory.  If you're interested in hearing what he had to say about the experience, please see below to view some short interview clips with Joel.

Wayzata Ranked Top U.S. Sailing Town

Sailing World magazine has ranked the City of Wayzata a top sailing town in the nation.  Our busy racing schedule, commitment to youth sailing and our community sailing center, our four season sailing, and great social community all contributed to the ranking.  Congratulations to everyone on...well...being you.

Wanted: Co-Skipper

Velocity Girl looking for a co-skipper for the 2017 Newport-Bermuda

With Velocity Girl (GBR 932R) only just finishing her refit I have changed my itinerary for this year and plan to race in the Newport Bermuda 1-2, the solo race starts on June 2nd.  We will be racing on behalf of the Gillette Children’s Hospital. I will be looking for a co-skipper for the return double handed race on June 15th from Bermuda to Newport RI. This race is organized by the Newport Yacht Club RI.
Velocity Girl ‘GBR 932R’ a VQ32 is specially designed for shorthanded offshore racing and has a strong pedigree including Fastnet, Round Britain, Trans-Atlantic and Great Lakes races. She has been through a major refit preparing for offshore races and is ready to go.

I am looking for a co skipper with a great attitude and whether you have more or less experience than me we should be competitive and have a great experience. I would also take a ‘junior’ sailor 18+ who expressed interest in offshore racing and in representing Minnesota.

  • - Must be in Bermuda by June 10th.
  • - Prepared to share drive back to MN with Velocity Girl on her trailer.
  • - Ideally has offshore experience and taken the Sea Survival Course.
  • - Deliver Velocity Girl to Newport by May 5th.
The co-skipper is welcome to fly out and take part in warm up sails in Newport before the start of the solo race on June 2nd. All expressions of interest please email – I will seek to find the very best candidate for a competitive entry into this race. Velocity Girl's itinerary will include the Solo Trans Superior, Transpac, OSTAR, Cowes Week and Newport Bermuda 1-2 between now and 2020.

Twin Cities Regional Sailing Association

WYC Member Jeff Cameron is setting up a US Sailing Regional Sailing Association for the Twin Cities area, the Twin Cities Regional Sailing Association (TCRSA).  One significant benefit the Association is its inclusion into US Sailing.  This creates the opportunity to host various US Sailing’s Championship events (see below).  The winner of these events may be named as the US representative in international regattas in those disciplines.  This organization will be beneficial to the adult and youth sailors of the Twin Cities by allowing greater access to national events.  Please volunteer to help make this association a reality!  Please contact Jeff Cameron at if you are interested in helping out or sitting on the board.

The 2017 Star of the North Regatta will be held Sept 15, 16, 17 on beautiful Lake Minnetonka as usual.  After a very successful 10-race regatta in 2016 we're really looking forward to this next one.  We have several ideas in the works that will continue to enhance the competition and continue to expand this great event.

So, save the date.  We expect this to be awesome!
