Mid Winter Match Racing Kick Off
2005, Feb 11th at 5 pm before Cliff’s seminar
Sailing season is not that far off, some of our comrades have been ripping it up in warm sunny places, while the rest of us just dream of soft water sailing. You may think to yourself after reading every issue of “Sailing World” cover to cover, “what can I do to most improve this year”.
The answer is simple… Come out and learn Match Racing! I guarantee you and your team will learn more in one night Match Racing, then in a whole season of fleet racing. And what better way to get things rolling, then an advanced rules seminar by one of US Sailings premiere judges, Cliff Black.
Cliff is a top Judge and Match Racing master. I have had the privilege to compete in numerous events with Cliff as Judge, after the day’s racing Cliff holds what we call a “de-brief” session. All the days’ races are recorded; the competitors then have a chance to ask questions about certain rule calls and foul penalties of the day’s racing. This is an amazing way to learn the art of tactics and rules in a non hostile environment, like the protest room!
This year we will be moving Match Monday’s to Wednesday’s. We did this because so many people are just returning from out of town sailing, or a big weekend on the lake, we needed “one day off”. I am excited about sailing on Wednesday this year! We will once again be offering the “Chez Foley” de-brief session and FREE happy hour food, thanks to our good friend and owner Tom Fritz. Rumor has it Fritzy is remodeling Chez Foley with a more nautical feel, a new bar and flat screen TV’s, he welcomes all WYC sailors to visit.
Once again this year the Wayzata Yacht Club will be holding the new and improved Richardson Trophy Qualifier (RTQ) June 4-5, 2005. The RTQ will have a new format that extends an invitation to all sailors and member clubs in the Lake Superior Yachting Association (LSYA) area. Multiple teams from one club will be allowed. We will also extent an open invitation to any guest club within the LSYA area. If your team wins, you will represent LSYA for the prestigious Richardson Trophy at Bayview Yacht Club on October 8-9, 2005.

Welcome
August, 2004
Monday Night Math Racing is here! Come learn the game that all the America’s Cup and rock star pro sailors are competing in.
Starting June 7th 2004 and continuing through the summer, WYC will be holding match racing in Wayzata Bay. Match racing will be open to all local sailors who wish to refine their rules skills or learn this fun head to head competition.
The format is simple, 3 Monday’s in June, July and August we will meet at WYC, have a quick shore meeting, then put our teams together, grab our boats, and battle mono-eh-mono baby! We will track season standings and have a season end Match Champion, who will then represent Wayzata Yacht Club for the Richardson Cup Qualifier, to be sailed in mid-September on Lake Minnetonka. If our WYC teams win the Qualifier, that team will travel to Michigan to take on the best teams from around the country!
The first Monday will have a quick introductory shore meeting on the basics of Match Racing with our own local Match rock star Lars Hansen, then we pick teams, jump on our boats and race.
After a great night of racing, we will retire to our Match Monday Sponsor, Chez Foley Restaurant, in downtown Wayzata for appetizers drink specials and a “de-brief” session, where all sailors get a chance to ask questions, review rules, and go over the nights sailing.
Spread the word, call your buddies, put your team together, or just show up! This promises to be the best night of sailing!

Volume 2.0 - April 28, 2004
Wow! I am really excited about all the interest in our up coming Match Racing program. Here is a quick update.
I wanted to take a second and start to answer many of your questions, and things I know for sure at this point.
-
Many of you are wondering if Match Monday’s will only be on J22’s? No is the simple answer. I would like to use J24,s , Capri, Sonar, and S2’s for the final round, being the Richardson is sailed on S2’s again.
-
The hard part is getting boats to use, so that said, maybe folks can start helping me find 2-4 boats in each of those classes to use.
-
In the case of the J24 and J22 I have 4 sets of sails for each class boat to use. This way the boat lender doesn’t need to worry about their sails being used. If you’re interested in donating your old sails, give me an email or phone call.
-
Crew, many people are wondering how they might be able to crew on a team. Come on out on the first Monday and we will pick teams, this is an awesome chance to ramp up your boat handling skills.
-
Times and dates, We will be meeting at the WYC Club house June 7th at 6pm.
More updates to follow! Thanks for all your interest
